Business
Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNQ) is a leading independent crude oil and natural gas producer engaged in the acquisition, exploration, development, production, marketing, and sale of crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids (NGLs) primarily in Western Canada, the U.K. North Sea, and Offshore Africa. Founded in 1973 and headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, the company operates a diversified portfolio encompassing natural gas from Northeast British Columbia and Northwest Alberta including the Montney and Deep Basin formations; light and medium crude oil along with NGLs such as ethane, propane, and butane; primary heavy crude oil and Pelican Lake heavy crude oil enhanced by its world-class polymer flood project; bitumen via thermal in situ methods at projects including Primrose, Wolf Lake, Kirby North, Kirby South, and Jackfish; and synthetic crude oil (SCO) from mining and upgrading operations at its 100%-owned Horizon Oil Sands Mine and Upgrader, 90% working interest in the Muskeg River and Jackpine mines, and the Shell-operated Scotford Upgrader, supported by the Quest Carbon Capture and Storage facility. Canadian Natural maintains one of the largest undeveloped land bases for natural gas and significant thermal in situ opportunities, targeting refineries, utilities, industrial users, petrochemical plants, and global oil markets with integrated operations across upstream production, midstream transportation via pipelines and rail, and marketing. In recent developments, the company completed its acquisition of Chevron's Alberta assets in late 2024 for US$6.5 billion, securing a 20% interest in the Athabasca Oil Sands Project (AOSP) including Albian mines and Duvernay light crude oil assets, followed by a 2025 AOSP swap transaction with Shell that granted 100% ownership of Albian mines while retaining an 80% non-operated interest in Scotford Upgrader and Quest; acquired Grande Prairie liquids-rich Montney assets and the Palliser Block in 2025 adding approximately $690 million in unbudgeted net acquisition capital; and announced over $15 billion in oil sands expansions in November 2025 including Jackfish brownfield expansion, Pike 2 SAGD facility, Jackpine Mine expansion, and Horizon North Mine expansion with potential to add 340,000 bbl/d of bitumen production.
